Bolt

Family profile

Bolt is an international mobility and delivery technology company best known for ride-hailing, micromobility, car-sharing, and food and grocery delivery services. Headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia, the company has built a strong presence across Europe and has expanded extensively in Africa and parts of Western Asia, where it is widely recognized as a major platform in the e-hailing sector. Bolt operates as a large multi-market platform business serving both consumers and gig-economy drivers and couriers.

From a security and fraud perspective, Bolt is relevant as a consumer platform that relies on account creation and promotional incentives, making it a potential target for abuse through large-scale fake-account registration and sign-on bonus fraud. Such abuse can be facilitated by services that circumvent SMS-based verification, enabling attackers to create apparently legitimate accounts at scale.

The name Bolt is also associated with a separate historical file-sharing website that suffered a data breach in approximately March 2017. That incident exposed roughly 995,000 user records from the site’s forum software, including usernames, email addresses, IP addresses, and salted MD5 password hashes. Because the same name has been used by unrelated entities, care is required when attributing security incidents to the correct organization.
